Iran volleyball team overpowers Egypt at Olympic Games
Iran defeated Egypt in straight sets (28-26, 25-22, 25-16) in Pool B on Saturday at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games men’s volleyball competition at Maracanazinho.

Shahram Mahmoudi was solid from the three-meter line, as he produced 19 attacks. He also blocked two shots to add up to his total of 21 points. Ahmed Abdelhay top scored for Egypt with 13 markers.

“The team played better and we are happy to get the victory. There were a lot of nerves and tension because we want to move to the quarterfinals, so this was an important match. We tried our best to stay calm and play the best we did, and it worked out for us,” Iran coach Raul Lozano said.

Iran started the campaign with a 3-0 loss to Argentina and then lost to Poland 3-2.

Lozano’s men overpowered Cuba 3-0 in their third match.

Iran has been scheduled to meet Russia on Monday.

The volleyball competition at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games started on August 6 and will finish on August 21.

Host Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States are in Pool A.
